EXAMINATION OF METHADONE IN CONTROLLING HEROIN ADDICTION, ANTABUSE IN TREATING ALCOHOLISM, THE BREATH ANALYZER IN HIGHWAY SAFETY, AND GUN CONTROL IN REDUCING CRIME.
Abstract
EVALUATIVE STUDIES OF THESE TECHNOLOGICAL APPROACHES ARE EXAMINED, AND ESTIMATES OF THE PROBABLE UTILITY OF THESE 'SHORTCUTS' AS WELL AS AN ANALYSIS OF THE LIMITATIONS AND PROSPECTS OF SUCH EVALUATIONS ARE MADE. TO DEAL WITH THE MANY ARGUMENTS WHICH SUGGEST THAT THE PROPOSED SHORTCUTS DEAL ONLY WITH THE SYMPTOMS OF THE PROBLEMS AND NOT WITH ITS FUNDAMENTAL CAUSES, THE AUTHORS REVIEW BRIEFLY THE MAJOR ALTERNATE APPROACHES FOR HANDLING SOCIAL PROBLEMS. THIS STUDY IS CONCERNED WITH SHORTCUT APPROACHES WHICH DO NOT ASSUME THE AVAILABILITY OF A VERY LARGE AMOUNT OF NEW RESOURCES, WHICH UTILIZE MEANS OF SOLVING PROBLEMS OTHER THAN PSYCHOTHERAPY, WHICH DO NOT REQUIRE TOTAL PLANNING AND WHICH CAN BE ADVANCED WITHOUT A REVOLUTION.
