Activity highlights and statistics for the 1997-1998 fiscal year are presented in this annual report of the Tennessee Department of Correction (DOC).
Abstract
The annual report contains a mission statement for the DOC, along with organizational charts and information on administrative services and operations of the DOC and community corrections. It indicates that about $4.28 million was collected in probation fees as a result of enhanced collection efforts, a 20-percent increase over the previous year. The DOC added 744 prison beds through new construction, as well as 174 additional beds without construction cost. The DOC's recycling program was expanded, resulting in continued annual savings of about $476,000 over fiscal year 1994-1995 baseline expenditures. The DOC continued to realize an estimated $9.9 million in annual savings due to changes initiated in fiscal year 1996-1997, including the consolidation of prison operations, the elimination of some upper level management positions, increased inmate to teacher ratios, and the closure of three small minimum-security facilities. Other cost savings realized by the DOC are noted, and statistics are tabulated on admissions and releases and the felon population. Tables and figures
