DEVELOPMENT OF A STATISTICAL ADJUSTMENT PROCESS, APPLIED TO SEASONAL VARIATION IN FBI INDEX CRIMES IN MIAMI, FLORIDA.
Abstract
USING MIAMI DATA FOR 1949-1970, A TEST FOR SEASONALITY IS DEVELOPED. SEASONAL INDICES ARE THEN CONSTRUCTED FOR A NUMBER OF CRIME TYPES. A DEFINITE SEASONAL PATTERN IN MIAMI ECONOMIC CRIME DATA IS FOUND TO EXIST, ALTHOUGH ITS IMPORTANCE SEEMS TO BE DECLINING IN RECENT YEARS. CRIME, EXCLUDING CRIMES OF PASSION, GENERALLY TENDS TO BE HIGHER FROM OCTOBER THROUGH MARCH. APPLICATIONS OF SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA TO PUBLIC INFORMATION, PLANNING AND EVALUATION, AND PATROL DISTRIBUTION ARE BRIEFLY DISCUSSED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
