A survey conducted in February 2000 gathered information on the time taken between stages of criminal proceedings for completed cases in magistrates’ courts in England and Wales.
Abstract
Results revealed significant variations in time taken across different courts. The average time from the first listing to completion varied from 12 days for the City of London Justice rooms, 13 days for Sutton, and 15 days for Trafford to 65 days for Sunderland and West Midlands and 73 days for Haringey. The average time from the charge or presenting of information to the first listing declined to 12 days in February 2000 from 23 days in February 1999. The average time from offense to completion for defendants in indictable cases decreased to 121 days in February 2000 from 129 days in February 1999. The average time from first listing to completion declined to 59 days from 60 days in the same period. However, the average time from offense to charge of presenting of information rose to 51 days in February 2000 from 46 days in February 1999. The percentage of cases completed at the first listing increased from 22 percent in February 1999 to 26 percent in February 2000. Figures, tables, and reference notes
