THE PROBLEMS IN DENMARK CONNECTED WITH THE COMPULSORY SUPERVISORY SYSTEM FOR CRIMINAL DRUG ABUSERS.
Abstract
THE SUPERVISORY SYSTEM FOR CRIMINAL DRUG ABUSERS, AS OPPOSED TO THE VOLUNTARY NARCOTIC TREATMENT CENTERS FOR NON-CRIMINALS, IS BASED ON COMPULSORY TREATMENT AND IS CONNECTED WITH THE SUPERVISING AGENCIES WITHIN THE PENAL SYSTEM. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THE SYSTEM BE REFORMED SO AS TO FUNCTION ON A VOLUNTARY BASIS AND IN CLOSER CONTACT WITH THE COMMUNITY. AS IT IS NOW, THE POSSIBILITIES AVAILABLE FOR HELPING THE CRIMINAL DRUG ABUSER THROUGH THE OFFICIAL CHANNELS OF THE SUPERVISORY SYSTEM ARE VERY POOR. HOSPITALIZATION AND OTHER INSTITUTIONAL ATTEMPTS FOR CURE ARE USUALLY BEYOND THE REACH OF THE LIMITED RESOURCES OF THE SUPERVISORY SYSTEM. OTHER ATTEMPTS AT POSITIVE RESULTS WITHIN THE COMPULSORY TREATMENT PROGRAM ARE SEVERELY HAMPERED BY THE NEGATIVE MOTIVATION OF THE INVOLUNTARY CLIENT. --IN DANISH
