Magnum Performance Ballistics has just released a 12-gauge shotshell that uses the 1 1/8-ounce Quik-Shok slug.
Abstract
Bullets with the Quik-Shok design are available in a .22 Long Rifle rimfire and a 12-gauge slug from MPB-Polywad. The exotic design also is available as a centerfire handgun round in calibers from .380 Auto to .45 Auto from Triton Cartridge. During penetration, the pre-stressed Quik-Shok projectile expands rapidly and then splits into three even sections. These segments or fragments penetrate in separate directions in an ever-widening pattern inside a soft target. Each of these three fragments weighs 164 grams. The slug itself has an initial penetrating velocity of nearly 1,500 fps, giving each fragment nearly 800 foot-pounds of energy. Each of the 164-grain Quik-Shok fragments has more momentum and more energy than any .357 Magnum hollowpoint. Each Quik-Shok fragment penetrates between 13 and 18 inches of 10 percent gelatin, just like the .357 Magnum hollowpoints. This article describes the making of the Quik-Shok, the Sabot slug performance, and the results of tests performed by "Law Enforcement Technology" journal.
