A REALISTIC PICTURE OF CONTEMPORARY LAW AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IS PRESENTED IN THIS FILM STRIP AND AUDIOCASSETTE SERIES FOR TEENAGE STUDENTS.
Abstract
AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE LAW IS NECESSARY FOR THE PROPER PARTICIPATION OF A CITIZEN IN SOCIETY. HOWEVER, THE LEGAL SYSTEM IS A CONTINUOUSLY OPEN-ENDED PROCESS, FOREVER APPROACHING, BUT NEVER REACHING PERFECTION. THIS TENTATIVENESS CAN BE FRUSTRATING FOR YOUNG PERSONS IN A CHANGING WORLD AS THEY SEEK FOR RATIONAL ANSWERS. THIS EDUCATIONAL SERIES IDENTIFIES BOTH THE LETTER OF THE LAW AND THE LAW'S SPIRIT, AS THEY ARE APPLIED TO THE REAL WORLD. THE LAW IS SHOWN TO RELATE TO THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE, THE PRESERVATION OF INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS, AND THE PROTECTION OF SOCIETY. EXPLANATIONS OF PERTINENT LAWS APPLICABLE TO THE SITUATIONS DEPICTED IN THE SERIES ARE PROVIDED IN THE DISCUSSION LEADER'S GUIDE, TOGETHER WITH TEACHING STRATEGIES WHICH SUGGEST QUESTIONS AND TOPICS OF DISCUSSION. SPECIFIC SEGMENTS OF THE SERIES PORTRAY THE FUNCTION OF THE LAW AND THE LEGAL SYSTEM DURING SEARCHES AND SEIZURES BY POLICE, DURING ARRESTS, AFTER THE COMMISSION OF A SERIOUS CRIME, DURING THE INVESTIGATION OF AN ASSAULT UPON A HITCHHIKER, AFTER A HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENT, AND AFTER A ROBBERY AND SHOOTING. BASIC DESCRIPTIONS OF POLICE PROCEDURE, THE USE OF SEARCH WARRANTS, AND THE LEGALITY OF SELF-DEFENSE ARE PROVIDED. A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY LISTS BOOKS WHICH DEAL WITH THE LAW ENFORCEMENT SITUATIONS SHOWN IN THE SERIES. (TWK)
