DESCRIBES THE RECOVERY OF A STOLEN BOAT AND DISCUSSES GENERAL POLICIES, PROCEDURES, AND REGULATIONS IN THIS AREA.
Abstract
FOLLOWING A DETAILED EXAMPLE OF THE RECOVERY OF A STOLEN VESSEL BY THE COAST GUARD, THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE ASSISTANCE THE COAST GUARD CAN OFFER LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES TO DEAL WITH THE GROWING PROBLEM OF STOLEN BOATS. THEY STATE THE MINIMUM VALUE OF THE BOAT NECESSARY TO GET ASSISTANCE. COMMENTS ARE MADE AS WELL ON THE USEFULNESS OF THE COAST GUARDS IN CASES OF INTERSTATE MATTERS AND STOLEN BOATS. THE COAST GUARD HAS PROMULATED A REGULATION REQUIRING ALL BOATS MANUFACTURED AFTER NOVEMBER 1, 1972 TO CARRY A HULL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER WHICH MUST BE CARVED, BURNED, STAMPED, EMBOSSED, OR OTHERWISE PERMANENTLY AFFIXED TO THE OUTSIDE OF EVERY HULL ABOVE THE WATERLINE IN SUCH A WAY THAT ALTERATION, REMOVAL, OR REPLACEMENT WOULD BE OBVIOUS AND EVIDENT.
