Abstract
THE NATURE OF THE POLICE TASK CALLS FOR MORE THAN MINIMALLY EDUCATED POLICE OFFICERS AND THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO EFFECT MAJOR CHANGES IN THE EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE RECRUITMENT. THE RECOMMENDATIONS INCLUDE - RECLASSIFICATION OF POLICE PERSONNEL, CHANGING PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, CHANGING RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS AND PROMOTIONAL SYSTEMS, INCREASING COMPENSATION, ESTABLISHING OPEN COMPETITION, AND PROVIDING JOB SECURITY AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRESENT PERSONNEL.
