This three-page brochure describes the objectives of the federal VALOR Officer Safety and Wellness Program (VALOR Program), its intended impact on law enforcement officers, and online access to program information.
Abstract
The training objective of the VALOR Program is to provide research-based publications, information, and training to law enforcement officers and agencies to inform them of current issues related to officer safety and health, as well as to encourage them to engage in critical thinking regarding decisions about their safety and wellness. Another objective of the VALOR Program is to challenge law enforcement officers to change their behaviors; continue professional growth; and overcome their weaknesses through training with the best curriculum, tools, and resources. The VALOR Program also inspires officers by sharing real-life accounts of model behaviors by officers during challenges to their safety and wellness. In addition, this brochure outlines the following five envisioned impacts of the VALOR Program: 1) officer recognition of threats against her/his safety; 2) the building of an officer's safety skill set; 3) raising an officer's situational awareness; 4) improvement in an officer's physical and mental health; and 5) training officers to "survive and thrive." The brochure presents recent statistics on officers assaulted, officer deaths in the line of duty, officers shot and killed, and officers ambushed.
