Initial research on the Clark County, Nev. Victim Services Program indicates that the program is successful, particularly in educating the community.
Abstract
Clark County includes the city of Las Vegas, and thus faces many unique problems with the large tourist trade. A principal problem with a potentially significant effect on tourism is crime. Community leaders took the initiative in heading off this problem by establishing the Victim Services Program. The objectives of the program included: identification and definition of victims, victimization, and factors contributing to victimization; development of educational programs to heighten community awareness of victimization; obtaining funds for victim assistance and education programs; on-going assessment of program needs; and, development of a network with similar programs. Researchers have yet to determine the results of the identification process and the needs assessment. The educational program has been quite successful, however, and citizen demand for more information has been overwhelming. Fundraising and initial networking effort have also been successful.
