Abstract
THE DATA FOR THIS STUDY WERE OBTAINED FROM THE FILES OF THE PHILADELPHIA JUVENILE COURT AND THE PHILADELPHIA POLICE DEPARTMENT. COMMENTS ARE MADE ON THE SAMPLING AND COLLECTION OF DATA, OUTLINING THE PROCESS BY WHICH THE DATA WERE GATHERED AND ANALYZED. EXPLANATIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS OF CERTAIN TERMS AND MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES USED ARE OFFERED, ALONG WITH A DISCUSSION OF CERTAIN PROBLEMS OF MEASUREMENT AND THE ANALYTIC TECHNIQUES USED. CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION IS DEVOTED TO THE USE OF VICTIM TYPOLOGIES WITH DISCUSSION OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF TYPOLOGIES AND AN EXPLANATION FOR THE ONE SELECTED FOR THIS STUDY. AN OVERVIEW IS PRESENTED OF THE OFFENDERS USED IN THE STUDY, THE OFFENSE CHARACTERISTICS, AND THE VICTIMS OF DELINQUENCY. THE AUTHOR THEN EXAMINES THE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS OF THE OFFENDERS BY RACE, SEX, AGE, INCOME, MOTIVATION OF DELINQUENCY, INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND WORK RELATIONSHIPS. NONPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS ARE ANALYZED BY OFFENDERS, MOTIVATION OF DELINQUENCY, FORMAL RELATIONSHIPS (NEIGHBOR, EMPLOYEE-EMPLOYER, AND STUDENT-SCHOOL), TYPE OF ENTERPRISE, INCOME, AND PERSONAL AND NONPERSONAL CRIME. A SECTION ON THEORETICAL AND RESEARCH CONSIDERATIONS EXAMINES VICTIM TYPOLOGY, PERSONAL VICTIMS, NONPERSONAL VICTIMS, AND OTHER RESEARCH DIRECTIONS. THE APPENDIXES CONTAIN MISCELLANEOUS TABLES, THE BOOK USED FOR CODING THE DATA IN THIS STUDY, THE BOSTON DATA (WHICH IS NOT REPORTED IN THE BODY OF THIS STUDY), AND RACE, SEX, AND AGE SPECIFIC VICTIM RATES.
