This article describes a short-term group offered to adult abuse survivors to aid in spiritual healing.
Abstract
The article defines a person’s spirit as the humanizer and the vitalizer--the force in each person that searches to rise above self, to fulfill, to grasp, to find meaning and purpose in life. Small groups for spiritual healing were offered to victims of family violence at a Center for Nursing in a large midwestern university. Techniques were shared for getting in touch with the creative power and wisdom that resides within each person, whether termed Higher Power, Inner Wisdom, God, or My Spirit. Group members practiced centering, grounding, visualizations, meditation, and keeping a journal; they used poetry and art to discover their spiritual gifts, determine their unique spiritual paths, recognize the profound in daily life, and determine the beliefs that impinge on spiritual growth and creativity.
