This volume presents background information and materials intended to promote understanding of the issue of violence in the mass media, its impacts on behavior, and policy proposals regarding its regulation.
Abstract
The text provides an overview of the history and current status of the issue, analyzes research data supporting differing opinions, and considers opposing arguments regarding the use of the law to limit violence in the media. The first chapter reviews the issue, its historical background, and the major questions involved in the debate over media violence. Subsequent chapters provide a chronology of important events that have taken place over the past 2 centuries in relation to this issue and biographical summaries of some of the important persons in the controversy over the place and effects of media violence. The next chapter presents the text of major laws, regulations, judicial decisions, industry standards, and policy statements on the topic. Further chapters list and describe organizations interested in and working on the topic and annotated lists of print and nonprint resources. Glossary and index
