              A staff committee at Lorne Avenue School in London, Ontario, Canada developed a violence awareness week as a response to the school district director's challenge to develop a school-based response to domestic assault and related issues.
          Abstract
              The committee decided that the week would focus on increasing awareness of violence in society, the media, and the home; aiding staff when disclosures of violence occurred; developing a social skills curriculum focusing on alternatives to violence; and focusing staff development on school-related issues of family violence. They also decided that the curriculum would focus on awareness of violence, advocacy to encourage students in violent homes to seek support and other students to support their peers, and alternatives to violence in provoking situations. The week began with assemblies. Special events took place during recess. Staff and selected students gave helping-hands awards to students who demonstrated positive and appropriate responses in social interactions. Workers from the local women's shelter gave a presentation to students. The staff adopted a proposed procedure for dealing with children and adults disclosing family violence.
