This ninth issue of the Quarterly Newsletter (October-December 2016) of the U.S. Department of Justice's (DOJ's) Violence Reduction Network (VRN) features a reflection on 2016, a prospective view of proposed VRN activities in 2017, an overview of site resource deliveries, and a new "community corner" that spotlights local efforts in VRN site communities.
Abstract
VRN's activities in 2016 are viewed as an expansion of the number of participating sites and a realization of outcomes and sustainment of violence-reduction strategies for older VRN sites. Under the expanded number of sites, VRN remains committed to building upon existing violence-reduction efforts by providing customized training, technical assistance, and other resources tailored to the distinctive needs of each site. In highlighting the activities at specific sites within the last quarter, attention is given to the development of a strategic plan, social network analysis, gang assessment, grant-development technical assistance, peer exchanges, and technology assessment, along with VRN team site visits. Regarding the outlook for 2017, Phase 2 sites will enter their final year of formal engagement with the VRN, which focuses on training and technical assistance in sustaining effective violence-reduction programs. DOJ leadership will begin the vetting process for new cities to join the Network, which will constitute Phase 4, to be launched at the September 2017 summit. Highlights are reported for each Phase 1 and Phase 2 site. Cumulative statistics as of December 31, 2016, cover the customer satisfaction rating, peer exchanges, training and technical assistance hours and programs conducted, number of participants, and website visits and downloads.
