This document provides statistics for the prison population in the State of Virginia in October 2001.
Abstract
In October 2001 the average number of responsible offenders incarcerated in Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) institutions was 28,106. This was a 0.5 percent increase from the 27,963 average inmate population in custody the previous month and a 3.2 percent increase from the average population (27,246) recorded one-year ago. The average number of out-of-state offenders housed in contract beds was 3,404. The total average daily population in DOC institutions was 31,510 offenders. For probation and parole, a total caseload of 42,077 was reported for the month. This included 4,869 active parolees and 37,208 active probationers. This is a 1 percent increase from the 41,659 active caseloads reported last month. The active caseload for intensive supervision was 2,665. The number of offenders under home electronic monitoring supervision was 61. The number of offenders held in detention centers was 444. The number of offenders in diversion centers was 571. The total number in boot camp was 60. The offenders in day reporting centers numbered 1,236.
