This is a review of major activities of the Virginia judicial system in 1998.
Abstract
The report's seven sections present the following data: (1) The Judiciary's Year in Review (major activities, caseload activity, summary of courts' jurisdiction and structure, provision of indigent defense services and the involuntary mental commitment process); (2) Caseload Summaries (activities in the 31 circuits and 32 districts in the Commonwealth); (3) Judicial Policy making Bodies; (4) Judges and Their Terms; (5) Personnel, Salary and Classification Plans (for the district courts and magistrate system); (6) Caseload Statistics (for all the circuit and district courts); and (7) Financial Statistics (for the circuit and district courts). New features in the 1998 report include: Specialized Drug Court Dockets; Circuit Courts 1980-1998 Commenced and Concluded Cases Per Judge; methods of disposition, percent and number of concluded civil and criminal cases; circuit courts criminal defendants; and interpreter appointments for non-English speakers in criminal cases.
