STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION ON DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR, AND INQUIRY INTO CHARACTERISTICS PREDICTIVE OF REHABILITATION SUCCESS.
Abstract
THE THREE YEAR RESEARCH PROJECT DEALT WITH 147 TEEN AGED BOYS FROM THE FRAMINGHAM AND CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS AREA. THE BASIC HYPOTHESIS WAS THAT A COMPREHENSIVE VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM WOULD FOSTER THE DEVELOPMENT OF WORK AND SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT AND SUBSEQUENTLY DECREASE DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR WHILE THE OFFENDER REMAINED WITHIN HIS COMMUNITY. TWO MAJOR STUDIES WERE UNDERTAKEN TO EVALUATE THE SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM. THE FIRST CORRELATED 70 INDEPENDENT VARIABLES CONSISTING OF PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIOLOGICAL, AND PSYCHIATRIC MEASURES WITH 4 DEPENDENT MEASURES OF REHABILITATIVE OUTCOME. THE SECOND STUDY COMPARED TWO TREATMENT GROUPS, EXPERIMENTAL AND CONTROL, ON THREE MEASURES OF ADJUSTMENT ADMINISTERED PRIOR TO AND FOLLOWING TREATMENT AND ON A MEASURE OF RECIDIVISM. COMPARISON OF THE 13 EXPERIMENTAL-CONTROL PAIRS REVEALED NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE REHABILITATION TREATMENT. APPENDIXES CONTAIN REFERENCES, LETTERS RELATING TO THE PROJECT, CHART OF VOCATIONAL SERVICES RECEIVED BY THE BOYS, AND FOUR CASE STUDIES.
