Abstract
THE SEXUAL PSYCHOPATH STATUTE PASSED BY THE LEGISLATURE IN 1951 AFTER A STUDY OF WHAT OTHER STATES WERE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM, PROVIDES THE SUPERIOR COURTS OF WASHINGTON WITH A MORE RATIONAL AND EFFECTIVE MEANS OF DEALING WITH THE HABITUAL SEX OFFENDERS THAN THE USUAL CRIMINAL PROCEDURE. BRIEFLY, THE STATUTE PROVIDES FOR A SPECIALIZED 90-DAY EVALUATION AT A STATE HOSPITAL AND A REPORT OF FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE COURT BEFORE IT MAKES A FINAL DISPOSITION OF A CASE, CONFINEMENT FOR TREATMENT UNTIL FOUND 'SAFE TO BE AT LARGE' FOR MEN FOUND TO BE IN NEED OF AND AMENABLE TO TREATMENT, AND CONTINUING REVIEW AND CONTROL OF THE CASE BY THE COMMITTING COURT REGARDING DATE AND CONDITIONS OF RELEASE RATHER THAN THIS AUTHORITY BEING TRANSFERRED TO A DEPARTMENT OR AGENCY OF STATE GOVERNMENT.
