Fundamentals and general principles of wildlife law enforcement are presented as an integral part of game animal and nongame animal management in this text addressed to students, professional wildlife law enforcement personnel, sportsmen, and lay persons.
Abstract
In addition to topics considered in the second edition, this third edition addresses changes in State and Federal laws with respect to the rights of the individual, the collection of evidence, and the use of deadly force by law enforcement officers, as well as a new section on search by consent. A discussion of the role of wildlife law enforcement includes an outline of the history of wildlife law enforcement and a review of highlights of wildlife management, followed by a discussion of the role of law enforcement in management. Also considered are European wildlife administration, State jurisdiction over wildlife, Federal jurisdiction over wildlife, and the rights of private citizens under wildlife law. A discussion of the search of motor vehicles addresses techniques and legal parameters. Sections on other law enforcement techniques cover the selection and use of sidearms; arrest tactics, with particular attention to arresting the dangerous criminal; and the officer's preparation for and performance in court. The chapter on the wildlife law enforcement officer includes descriptions of responsibilities, professional qualifications, and professional duties. The violation of wildlife law, Indian hunting and fishing rights, and the future of wildlife and wildlife management are also examined. References, notes, recommended reading, and multiple choice questions on the material accompany each chapter.
