DISCRIMINATION TOWARD FEMALES IN SENTENCING, TREATMENT OF JUVENILES, QUALITY OF PRISON FACILITIES AND TRAINING PROGRAMS, AND DEALING WITH PREGNANCIES AND FAMILY PROBLEMS.
Abstract
DISCRIMINATION TOWARD FEMALES IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM BASED IN SOCIAL EXPECTATION IN SEXUAL, VOCATIONAL, AND FAMILY BEHAVIOR IS DISCUSSED. LONGER SENTENCES FOR WOMEN THAN MEN, POOR PRISON FACILITIES, RIGID BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATION FOR FEMALE JUVENILES, AND NARROW TRAINING AND REHABILITATION PROGRAMS ARE CITED AS AREAS OF NOTABLE DISCRIMINATION. TREATMENT OF PREGNANCIES AND CHILD CARE WHILE IMPRISONED ARE CONSIDERED INADEQUATE. REMEDY THROUGH COURT ACTION UNDER THE EQUAL PROTECTION CLAUSE OF THE FOURTEENTH AMENDMENT IS RECOMMENDED. A MODEL PROGRAM OF LEGAL EDUCATION AND COUNSELING CONDUCTED IN A NEW YORK WOMEN'S PRISON IS DESCRIBED.
