This article attempts to articulate several assumptions which seem to be commonly held by those working in the field of spouse abuse.
          Abstract
The evidence available to support and refute each assumption is reviewed and the implications inherent in each assumption for the treatment of spouse abuse are examined. Finally, the value of avoiding doctrinaire positions, given the current state of the field is presented. (Author abstract)
