This video instructs undercover narcotics officers in common undercover mistakes and ways to avoid them.
Abstract
The video is mostly a lecture by two New York City Police detectives, who identify special dangers in drug- enforcement undercover work, avoidable mistakes, and precautions. Simulated dramas and charts illustrate the lectures. Undercover officers must project demeanors and behave in ways that convince suspects the officers are experienced participants in the drug trade. Some common mistakes are failing to negotiate drug prices, jumping too quickly from small to large purchases, and coming to a drug "buy" alone. A common mistake in working with confidential informants is to trust their information and their motives. Their information should be checked. They should also be searched before and after their participation in any drug transactions. The location of drug transactions should be set by the undercover officer and be at a neutral location. No location should be used twice, and the undercover officer should never get into a car with a dealer.
