Abstract
Citing workplace violence as a growing concern in Hawaii, this handbook, a product of the Hawaii Workplace Violence Working Group Committee, addresses the development and implementation of workplace violence prevention programs. After explaining the goals and purposes of developing this handbook, the authors describe what is meant by “workplace violence” and categorize the types of workplace violence as stranger toward employee, customer toward employee, acquaintance/relative toward employee, and employee toward employee. After discussing employers’ moral and legal duties to providing a safe workplace, the authors detail the necessary steps in developing workplace violence prevention programs. Suggesting that working with a union is a good first step, the authors describe the reasons for developing written policies against harassment and workplace violence, providing examples of sample polices. After addressing workplace violence prevention through various types of employee training, this report provides guidelines for investigating workplace violence and for dealing with workplace violence through early intervention. Discussing workplace security, this report provides examples of handouts for helping employees handle threats and violence in person and on the telephone and for helping employees recover following a bout with workplace violence. Seventeen pages of addresses, telephone numbers, and Internet addresses of violence prevention and recovery resources are followed by a series of case studies and practice exercises to guide and train the reader with ways to prevent and handle various workplace violence scenarios. A series of publications, research articles, court cases, and security checklists concerning workplace violence comprise the appendices.
