After discussing various issues that pertain to organized transnational crime, participants in the World Ministerial Conference on Organized Transnational Crime identified a variety of modalities for international cooperation against organized crime.
Abstract
One objective of the conference was to examine the problems and dangers posed by organized transnational crime in the various regions of the world; another was to consider national legislation and to evaluate its adequacy in dealing with the various forms of organized transnational crime, as well as identify appropriate guidelines for legislative and other measures to be taken at the national level. The conference participants also identified the most effective forms of international cooperation for the prevention and control of organized transnational crime at the regional and international levels and to consider whether it would be feasible to expand international instruments. In their Political Declaration, the conference participants resolved that societies should be protected from organized crime in all its forms through strict and effective legislative measures and operational instruments, always consistent with internationally recognized human rights and fundamental freedoms. Other issues discussed in this conference report are a future international convention on transnational organized crime, technical cooperation among nations, legislative and regulatory measures, money laundering, and future action. 20 footnotes
