This kit includes a training videotape, facilitator’s manual, youth manual, and set of message cards for use in a 21-session group curriculum intended to enhance the strengths and creativity of adolescent females ages 14-19 and to develop positive peer support, and understanding and prevention of violence against women.
          Abstract
The participants may come from schools, recreation programs, treatment programs, and detention centers and may include youth leaders as well as youth at risk. The curriculum aims to provide a safe place for the youth to talk, to speak for themselves, to hear themselves, to hear one another, and to hear the voices of women in the community and in history in the presence of an adult who listens with respectful and caring attention. The curriculum also aims to help adolescent females develop resistance strategies both individually and collectively to meet challenges. The curriculum emphasizes the concept of violence as including abuse and sex discrimination, self-abuse, and violence against others. The sessions last 1.5 hours each and can be adapted to longer or shorter time periods. The facilitator’s manual explains the materials, objectives, agenda, exercises, and other guidelines for each session. The youth manual presents background information as well as the worksheets for the exercises included in each session. The message cards are intended for use by the youth. The videotape presents the perspectives of young women on their self-perceptions, societal attitudes, abuse, date rape, allies, and other topics.
