THIS CAREER GUIDANCE HANDBOOK DESCRIBES VARIED LAW ENFORCEMENT CAREERS IN POLICE AND STATE PATROL, IN POLICE SPECIALIZED UNITS, AND IN THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION AND OUTLINES THEIR REQUIREMENTS.
Abstract
THE HANDBOOK EXPLAINS THAT MUCH OF A POLICE OFFICER'S ACTIVITY SERVICES TO THE PUBLIC, SUCH AS RUSHING A SICK PERSON TO A HOSPITAL OR ASSISTING AT A FIRE, IN ADDITION TO FIGHTING CRIME. AS SUCH, THE CAREER REQUIRES SOME IMPORTANT PERSONAL QUALITIES, COURAGE, INTELLIGENCE, IMAGINATION, KEEN VISUAL AND AUDITORY PERCEPTION, AND THE ABILITY TO SOMETIMES ENDURE LONG HOURS OF FRUSTRATION AND BOREDOM. MINIMUM CAREER REQUIREMENTS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES AND FUTURE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES ARE PROVIDED. LATER CHAPTERS DESCRIBE BRITISH AND U.S. LAW ENFORCEMENT HISTORY; A TYPICAL POLICE PATROLMAN'S DAY (ONE WHICH CAN CHANGE ABRUPTLY FROM A ROUTINE CRUISE TO A ROBBERY OR FIRST-AID EMERGENCY); THE 1977 BLIZZARD RESCUE WORK OF THE NEW YORK STATE TROOPERS; AND THE EXACTING HIRING STANDARDS, SERVICES, AND CRIME LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS OF THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION (FBI). THE NATIONAL CRIME INFORMATION CENTER (NCIC), FBI SERVICE THAT MAINTAINS A NATIONWIDE COMPUTER HOOKUP, IS ALSO DESCRIBED. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS ARE GIVEN OF OTHER FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, POLICE SPECIALIZATIONS, EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING. TWO FINAL CHAPTERS DISCUSS PROMOTIONS, BENEFITS, AND SALARIES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, AS WELL AS HAZARDS AND CHALLENGES. PHOTOGRAPHS AND APPENDIXES CONTAINING NAMES AND ADDRESSES OF LOCAL AND STATE POLICE DEPARTMENTS AND LEAA REGIONAL OFFICES TO CONTACT FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT EDUCATION PROGRAM (LEEP) LOANS ARE INCLUDED.
