The article discusses female aggression and expression of aggressive behavior.
Abstract
The author studied female expressions of aggression. Gender differences in aggressive behavior including the biological basis for those differences are presented. The article then explores the cultural and informal social controls that contribute to those differences. The role of emotional socialization and particularly the difference in expectations concerning emotional expression, especially the expression of anger, is also discussed. The argument is made that women’s socialization of emotional expression and status as emotional beings is often used to explain instances of female violent aggression. The author then presents the argument that living within a patriarchal society has an impact similar to prison on women. The author goes on to discuss the ways in which increasing gender equality have decreased the prisonization effect in recent years. 42 Notes, 54 references
