This technical assistance packet is designed to help mentoring programs monitor mentor-youth relationships to insure positive matches.
Abstract
Providing instruction and materials to help mentoring programs monitor youth-mentor relationship matches is the goal of this technical assistance packet from the National Mentoring Center and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) agencies. Arguing that a youth's long-term one-to-one relationship with a supportive adult leads to a stronger sense of self worth, improved relationships with parents, decreased levels of alcohol and drug usage, and improved academic achievement, the author suggests that mentoring programs should use the information in this evaluation tool in order to evaluate mentoring programs to assure the long-term success of mentor-youth matches. This evaluation packet includes a detailed youth survey, designed to measure the quality of mentor-youth relationships, a survey scoring guide, a discussion of how to make the best use of the survey findings to strengthen mentoring programs, and a series of scoring sheets to score the individual youth surveys and to calculate survey scores. Instructions for how to administer, score, interpret, and use the youth surveys are included within each respective section. This evaluation tool ends with a listing of references and additional resources.
