Methodological problems limit the comparability of surveys on adolescent and adult consumption of alcohol and illegal drugs in Iceland and other countries and need attention to increase the comparability of future surveys.
Abstract
Several surveys of the use of alcohol and illegal drugs have been conducted during the past 15 years in Iceland. Studies of the adult population have focused mainly on alcohol use, while those carried out among adolescents have also included questions on illegal drugs. Surveys on adolescent drug abuse have usually been carried out as single projects which limits their comparability. In addition, the experience with the Scandinavian Drinking Survey, which gathered data from several nations, shows that comparative research projects must be designed with awareness of national research traditions and the practical problems encountered in different cultures. 23 references (Author abstract modified)
