The Action Volontaire Saint-Laurent, an experimental project conducted between November 1988 and November 1991, provided halfway house and followup and supervision services for parolees in Quebec, Canada, using an extensive volunteer network.
Abstract
Project goals were to involve volunteers at all levels of correctional intervention and to persuade the community to assume responsibility for and become involved with parolees. An effort was made to involve volunteers from local community service centers, community organizations, churches, social clubs, the media, local and daily newspapers, and the electronic media. Public meetings and special events were held to sensitize the public about offender reintegration. Client services included socialization, escort services, and group activities. Volunteer services were well received by parolees and community organizations. The general public demonstrated it was willing to be involved, and professional interveners were reasonably open to work with volunteers.
