This report shares researchers' and practitioners’ perspectives from a National Institute of Justice virtual meeting on evidence-based programs, policies, and practices to address gangs and gang violence.

Abstract

The National Institute of Justice hosted a virtual meeting on May 12, 2020, with researchers and practitioners to inform the development of evidence-based programs, policies, and practices to address problems associated with gangs and gang violence. The presentations focused on the research on gangs that NIJ has funded since 2012, information from CrimeSolutions on how to respond to gangs and gang violence, a randomized controlled trial of a gang intervention program in Denver, and lessons learned handling hurdles to rigorous research on a gang prevention program in Philadelphia. This report shares participants’ perspectives on the topics discussed. It may inform the priorities of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers as they make investments in studying or developing programs to address gangs and gang violence.
