This volume presents 16 papers by researchers from 10 European countries regarding research and policy issues related to the abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
Abstract
The analysis consider survey methods and current sources of data from different parts of Europe as well as their limitations. Individual papers examine methods of data collection from the general public, efforts to achieve comparability between surveys in different settings, measurement problems, measurement issues related to community surveys of juvenile alcohol use, and the relationship between alcohol consumption patterns and the harmful consequences of drinking. Additional papers examine the advantages and disadvantages of official statistics on drug abuse, the long-term patterns of individual drug abuse, and constraints on policy development. Recommendations focus on improvements in research and policy related to drug problems and the spread of HIV infection and AIDS among intravenous drug abusers.
