Abstract
In an effort to create safer and more caring communities by addressing the causes of crime and violence and reducing the opportunities for crime to occur, the National Crime Prevention Council produced this written tool for elementary school-aged children and their parents on the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs and keeping children safe while at school and in their communities. It begins with providing general background information on alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, discussing what adults and parents can do in building positive relationships with students to communicate the dangers in using illegal substances, and giving students the skills in resisting the use of illegal substances. Student safety message tips are presented in summarizing the health effects of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs on your body health, saying “no” to drugs, and having fun without drugs. Classroom activities are outlined for students in grades K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 and include: (1) identifying safe and unsafe things to eat; (2) developing good decision-making skills; (3) identify adults in their community who care about them; (4) strengthen positive relationships with adults; (5) identify reasons why children might use drugs; (6) identify health alternatives to using drugs; and (7) develop critical-thinking skills. The final area of discussion offers tips for parents in talking effectively with their child about alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. Resources
