DATA COLLECTED IN THIS STUDY OF THE AUTOBIOGRAPHIES OF 77 CONVICTED RAPISTS REVEALED THAT 50 PERCENT OF THEM WERE DRINKING AT THE TIME OF THE RAPE AND THAT 35 PERCENT WERE ALCOHOLICS.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR REVIEWS SEVERAL THEORIES WHICH HAVE BEEN SUGGESTED TO EXPLAIN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ALCOHOL AND THE COMMISSION OF SEXUAL AND/OR VIOLENT CRIMES, IT IS STATED THAT THE STRONG ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ALCOHOL AND RAPE INDICATED BY THESE RESULTS HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF FOLLOW-UP TREATMENT PROGRAMS FOR THE EX-OFFENDER. SUCH PROGRAMS, THE AUTHOR MAINTAINS, SHOULD FOCUS ON ADEQUATE CONTROL OF THE OFFENDER'S DRINKING BEHAVIOR AS WELL AS ON HIS SEXUAL ADJUSTMENT. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
