PAROLE SUPERVISION IS ANALYZED TO DETERMINE THE MEASURE OF ROLE DIMENSIONS OF CONTROL AND ASSISTANCE.
Abstract
QUESTIONNAIRES WERE GIVEN TO APPROXIMATELY 500 FULL-TIME FEDERAL PROBATION OFFICERS. AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO MEASURE THE AUTONOMY-RESTRICTIVENESS OF THE EMPLOYING AGENCY AND ITS EFFECT ON PRACTITIONER BEHAVIOR. THE ROLE DIMENSIONS OF CONTROL AND ASSISTANCE WERE FOUND TO DIFFERENTIATE FOUR POLAR TYPES OF PAROLE OFFICERS. THE TYPES LISTED AND DESCRIBED WERE THE PATERNAL, WHO WAS HIGH ON CONTROL AND ASSISTANCE, THE PUNITIVE, WHO WAS LOW ON ASSISTANCE AND HIGH ON CONTROL, THE WELFARE TYPE WHO WAS HIGH ON ASSISTANCE AND LOW ON CONTROL, AND THE PASSIVE OFFICER WHO WAS LOW ON BOTH DIMENSIONS. IN NEARLY ALL THE AGENCIES OF THE FEDERAL PROBATION AND PAROLE SYSTEM, A HIGH DEGREE OF AUTONOMY WAS FOUND. IT WAS ALSO FOUND THAT THESE TYPES OF OFFICES CONTAINED HIGH PROPORTIONS OF PAROLE OFFICERS WHO WERE LOW ON THE CONTROL DIMENSION AND DIVERSE ON THE ASSISTANCE DIMENSION. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES A SAMPLE OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE USED AND TABLES OF STATISTICAL FINDINGS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
