A DESCRIPTION OF THIS PROMOTIONAL SELECTION METHOD WHICH UTILIZES A SERIES OF MULTIO MENSIONAL, PERFORMANCE CENTERED INSTRUMENTS TO MEASURE BEHAVIORS WHICH ARE INDICATIVE OF EFFECTIVE POLICE MANAGERIAL PERFORMANCE.
Abstract
THE AUTHORS STATE THAT THE ASSESSMENT CENTER (SUPPLEMENTAL MANAGEMENT TESTING) MAY BE USED TO AID THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS IN POLICE ORGANIZATIONS AND OVERCOME MANY OF THE PITFALLS OF RELYING ONLY ON WRITTEN EXAMINATIONS. THE EVALUATION INSTRUMENTS TYPICALLY INCLUDE SEVERAL OF THE FOLLOWING: AN EXTENDED INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY A TEAM OF ASSESSORS, A LEADERSHIP EXERCISE, ROLE-PLAYING, AN IN-BASKET (JOB SIMULATION) EXERCISE, INDIVIDUAL FACT-FINDING, AND DECISION-MAKING EXERCISES. EACH OF THESE INSTRUMENTS IS DESCRIBED. OTHER FACTORS SUCH AS THE ROLE OF THE ASSESSORS, SELECTION OF POSSIBLE CANDIDATES, COST, VALIDITY, AND PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION ARE ALSO EXAMINED.
