Abstract
THE AUTHOR, A HIGH RANKING SOVIET JURIST, EXPLAINS THE INDIVIDUAL STAGES OF CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION AND DISPOSITION IN THE USSR FROM ARREST THROUGH APPEAL. HE OUTLINES THE FUNCTIONS OF THE PROSECUTOR, DEFENSE COUNSEL, THE COURTS, AND THE POLICE. SEVERAL POINTS IN THE CRIMINAL PROCESS, SUCH AS PRE-TRIAL DETENTION AND SEARCH AND SEIZURE, ARE EMPHASIZED TO DEMONSTRATE THE STATE'S RESPECT FOR THE RIGHTS OF THE ACCUSED AND THE PRESUMPTION OF INNOCENCE.
