Nine papers discuss the value of intervention and treatment for all family members in cases of spouse abuse.
          Abstract
Several papers describe the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of the battered woman syndrome by hospital emergency room personnel, conjoint therapy for both partners involved in a battering relationship, and group treatment of children in shelters for battered women. A look at issues, programs, and services examines crisis intervention provided by shelters for battered women, specially designed treatment programs for men who batter their wives, and additional training for police to give them more expertise for effective intervention and referral in domestic violence cases. One example of effective cooperation between the police and social workers in cases of spouse abuse -- the Family Trouble Clinic of Detroit -- is described. Two final papers discuss research on natural social networks as an important source of support and comfort for battered women, and children's observations of parental violence. Data tables, chapter reference lists, an index, and an appendix describing a course about domestic violence for police and social workers are included. For separate papers, see NCJ 92748-55.
