Abstract
THE LEGAL DEFINITIONS RELEVANT TO JUVENILE STATUS, DELINQUENCY, AND COURT JURISDICTION ARE OUTLINED. EACH DISTRICT'S REFORM SCHOOLS; PLACES OF SAFETY, DETENTION, AND/OR CARE; OBSERVATION CENTERS, VOCATIONAL TRAINING SCHOOLS; CHILDREN'S HOMES; AND APPROVED AGENCIES ARE LISTED WITH THEIR RESPECTIVE POPULATIONS. STATISTICS ARE PRESENTED ON JUVENILES IN CUSTODY AND PRISON BROKEN DOWN BY AGE, SEX, RACE, OFFENSE, AND DISTRICT. AGE, OFFENSE, SENTENCE, AND THE PRESENCE OF PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS ARE NOTED FOR EACH CASE OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY HEARD IN JOHANNESBURG IN 1972.
