This guide, the third in a series of three, focuses on jail resource coordination and was created to enhance the skills, knowledge, and capabilities of jail administrators in jail budgeting and resource management.
Abstract
This guide provides information on jail resource coordination, and describes strategies for identifying, securing, and coordinating jail resources received from multiple sources beyond the traditional funding sources of local tax-funded budgets. Because lack of resources is most often cited by jail administrators as negatively influencing safe and effective jail operation, this guide is intended, along with its predecessors, to help jail officials improve their use of the limited resources allocated to the jail by use of nontraditional approaches. A discussion of jail resource types and potential sources includes information on generating revenue, using the services of other agencies, soliciting donations from the community, and a summary review of how jail and community are linked by a common goal. Strategies for securing, coordinating, and managing jail resources include an eight-step strategy and methodology for sustaining the ongoing effort. Exhibits include a list of professional services provided by agencies and organization, resources provided by individuals or groups, and a sample assessment checklist. In conclusion, it is emphasized that alternative sources of funding and support from the community are increasingly important in assuring the ongoing growth and success of jail resource management. Source notes and a bibliography are included.
