INTENDED FOR USE IN CLASSROOM OR ROLL CALL TRAINING SESSIONS, THIS TRAINING KEY PROVIDES INFORMATION ON THE TYPES OF ALARM SYSTEMS AVAILABLE, METHODS OF OVERCOMING ALARM SYSTEMS, AND THE PROBLEM OF FALSE ALARMS.
Abstract
THIS TRAINING BULLETIN IS DESIGNED TO INFORM POLICE ON BURGLAR ALARM SYSTEMS SO THAT THEY MAY EFFECTIVELY INVESTIGATE BURGLARY SCENES, PROVIDE ADVICE TO PERSONS INSTALLING ALARM SYSTEMS, AND REDUCE THE NUMBER OF FALSE ALARMS. NOTING THAT THE BURGLAR ALARM SERVES TWO PURPOSES (TO DETER CRIMINALS AND ALERT POLICE), THE LESSON EXAMINES THE RELATIONSHIP OF BURGLARY APPREHENSIONS TO THE TIME LAPSED BETWEEN ALERTING THE POLICE AND ARRIVAL OF THE POLICE. THE BASIC COMPONENTS OF THE ALARM SYSTEM ARE EXAMINED; THESE INCLUDE THE PROTECTIVE CIRCUIT, THE CONTROL INSTRUMENT, AND THE SIGNALING DEVICE. THE TYPE OF SIGNALING DEVICE IS DETERMINED BY THE TYPE OF SYSTEM: LOCAL ALARM, CENTRAL STATION, PROPRIETARY, AND POLICE CONNECTION. AFTER DESCRIBING A FEW METHODS OF BEATING THE ALARM SYSTEM, THE LESSON EXAMINES THE THREE MAIN TYPES OF PROTECTION AFFORDED BY ALARMS - PERIMETER PROTECTION, POINT PROTECTION, AND AREA PROTECTION. THE NEED FOR REDUCING THE NUMBER OF FALSE ALARMS BY DETERMINING THE CAUSE AND CORRECTING THE PROBLEM IS EMPHASIZED. IN ADDITION TO THE LESSON, THIS KEY INCLUDES QUESTIONS ON THE LESSON SUGGESTIONS FOR RELATED READING, AND ANSWERS TO THE TRAINING KEY QUESTIONS. BROAD DISCUSSION QUESTIONS RELATING TO THE LESSON TOPIC ARE PROVIDED AS WELL.
