DETAILS OF THE OXNARD (CA) POLICE DEPARTMENT'S EXPERIENCE WITH A 'NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME PREVENTION OFFICER' CONCEPT WHICH TARGETED PARTICULAR HIGH-CRIME NEIGHBORHOODS FOR SPECIAL PREVENTION AND CONTROL ACTIVITIES.
Abstract
THIS EXPERIMENTAL EFFORT WAS AIMED AT INCREASING RESIDENT AWARENESS OF AND COMMITMENT TO ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY FOR CRIME PROBLEMS IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS. THE CRIME PREVENTION TECHNIQUES UTILIZED INCLUDED POLICE-SIMULATED BURGLARIES TO BRING PUBLIC ATTENTION TO THE PROBLEM OF THEIR LACK OF AWARENESS, PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS, AND HOME SECURITY CHECKS. THE RESULTS OF THIS EXPERIMENT WERE SUFFICIENTLY VALUABLE TO INDUCE THE CITY OF OXNARD TO CREATE A THREE-MAN CRIME PREVENTION UNIT.
