THE BEST WAY TO MAKE A BUSINESS BURGLAR-PROOF IS TO EXAMINE THE FACILITY FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF A PROSPECTIVE BURGLAR, AND TO TAKE APPROPRIATE MEASURES WITHOUT CUTTING CORNERS ON COSTS BY PURCHASING INEXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT.
Abstract
THE POLICE INVESTIGATION OF A TELEVISION STORE BURGLARY REVEALS THAT THERE ARE MANY PRECAUTIONS THAT A BUSINESSMAN CAN TAKE TO PREVENT BURGLARIES. THE FIRST THING TO DO IS TO 'THINK LIKE A CROOK'. ONCE HAVING ATTAINED THE PROPER FRAME OF MIND, PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES SUCH AS RECORDING THE SERIAL NUMBERS OF MERCHANDISE, INSTALLING PROPER LIGHTING, AND KEEPING ALLEYWAYS FREE OF TRASH SUGGEST THEMSELVES. OTHER MEASURES SUCH AS ADEQUATE ALARM SYSTEMS, METAL GRILLWORK IN FRONT OF DISPLAY WINDOWS, AND LOCKS THAT NEED KEYS BOTH INSIDE AND OUT HAVE SUBSTANTIAL DETERRENT VALUE. NOTHING SHOULD BE OVERLOOKED. IN THE FILM, FOR EXAMPLE, THE BURGLARS ENTERED THE TV SHOP THROUGH RECENTLY INSTALLED AIR DUCTS. THE ALARM SYSTEM SHOULD HAVE BEEN HOOKED UP TO THE VENT SYSTEM.
