THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMISSION ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE STANDARDS AND GOALS REVIEWS THE FINDINGS OF THAT COMMISSION AND PROPOSES IMPROVED CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND INCREASED COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT TO REDUCE CRIME.
Abstract
NOTING THAT THE COMMISSION'S GOAL WAS TO REDUCE STRANGER-TO-STRANGER CRIMES BY ONE-HALF BY 1983, THE AUTHOR ARGUES THAT TWO PRIMARY METHODS OF CRIME REDUCTION ARE AVAILABLE: REFORM OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND ENCOURAGEMENT OF COMMUNITY CRIME PREVENTION. AMONG THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORMS SUGGESTED BY THE COMMISSION ARE IMPROVED MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE, BETTER CRIMINAL JUSTICE STATISTICS, BROADER COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, IMPROVED CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION, PROVISION OF SPEEDY TRIALS, NEIGHBORHOOD POLICE, ABOLITION OF PLEA BARGAINING, COMMUNITY BASED CORRECTIONS, PROHIBITION OF HAND GUNS, AND CRIMINAL LAW REFORM. COMMUNITY CRIME PREVENTION EFFORTS RECOMMENDED BY THE COMMISSION INCLUDED CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT, CAREER DEVELOPMENT FOR CITIZENS, AND INCREASED JOB OPPORTUNITIES.
