This manual provides guidelines and information for instructors who teach a curriculum designed to prevent juvenile shoplifters from repeating their offense.
Abstract
Most of those juveniles who will be taught the course are first-time offenders. Offenders who shoplift to support their drug use or are hardcore shoplifters who are part of a "fencing" network are not eligible for program participation. The curriculum is designed to be given in two 3-hour segments or in one all-day 7-hour session. The curriculum is designed to create a group process whereby participants learn that their experience is not unique, can face that they have a problem, receive group support to regain self-respect, and receive individualized help to strengthen their own personal plan to stop shoplifting permanently. This instructor's manual outlines anticipated problems in the course of presenting the curriculum and suggests solutions. The instructor is also helped by being given a presentation format for each topic and session. This includes background material, material to be presented to the class verbatim, and quick reference notes.
