This book is primarily a review of the police chief selection process aimed principally at those police executives who want to make an impact on policing and advance professionally.
Abstract
The authors take the reader through the selection process systematically, providing a "roadmap" for prospective police executives to devise a winning strategy. The chapters cover issues such as career planning, resume writing, interview preparation, compensation package negotiation, employment agreements, the use of executive search consultants, the importance of image, and other elements related to a successful police chief job search. The book brings both potential and practicing police chiefs up to date on the law enforcement executive job market and provides information that will help them compete for the job they want. Material throughout the book draws on the findings of a survey conducted by the Police Executive Research Forum in late 1997. The survey questionnaire was sent to appointed police chiefs of the 500 largest city and county police agencies in the country. The survey covered such topics as selection, qualifications, and benefits. Overall, the book answers the two most basic questions a police chief candidate should ask himself/herself: How do I best prepare to be a police chief? Having obtained the appropriate background, experience, and training, how do I best compete in the chief selection process? Appended supplementary and sample materials and 48 suggested readings
