Airborne law enforcement in the Los Angeles Police Department began in 1957 and is now supported by 16 helicopters and an airplanes with crews that are primarily responsible for more than 1,300 felony arrests annually.
Abstract
The Air Support Division's 77 sworn personnel and 11 civilians log more than 20,000 hours of flight time annually and are also involved as secondary units for 3,500 additional arrests. The flight time includes patrol time, special flight missions, and training flights. The division provides routine patrol to the citizens of Los Angeles, with aircrews in the air continuously 18 to 20 hours a day and available on a call-out basis the rest of the time. The division helps locate criminal suspects and is involved in special investigations, surveillance, photographic assignments, lifesaving medical aid, and early detection of fires. It responds to citizen requests for service in seconds. Thus, the division provides the highest possible degree of support service to the officers of the Los Angeles Police Department. Photograph
