The aim of this how-to book is to stimulate practicing or would-be police supervisors to use their most valuable tool in approaching the role of an effective leader, i.e., common sense.
Abstract
The first two chapters examine what supervision is and show the would-be supervisors what they need to know and do to move from frontline officer to first-line supervisor. Chapter three discusses supervisory ethics and processional responsibilities, followed by a chapter that explores the key quality of leadership. The fifth chapter considers the police supervisor's role as an educator and trainer and offers some suggestions as to how to be an effective instructor. Chapter six examines the supervisor's vital task as an evaluator of employee performance and gives some tips on how to do it well. Two chapters address the supervisor's role as a disciplinarian in the correction process and as a planner in areas that range from special operations to personnel deployment to employee and personal goal- setting. Chapter nine scrutinizes the communication function and suggests ways to improve both oral and written communications skills. Barriers to effective communication are also identified. Remaining chapters discuss problemsolving techniques, the management of human and material resources, complaint or grievance processing, special problems of management, community policing, and supervision that enhances officer safety.
